Set right in the middle of Ka’anapali Beach, The Whaler has welcomed guests to West Maui since the mid-1970s. Its two 12-story oceanfront towers sit on nearly seven acres of the resort’s golden shoreline. The beachfront Ka’anapali Boardwalk runs just outside, and Whalers Village is next door. The Whaler is part of Ka’anapali Resort, Hawai’i’s first master-planned resort. The resort grew from former sugar cane land and opened in 1962. The Whaler’s name looks back to Lahaina’s whaling era. In the mid-1800s, nearby Lahaina was one of the busiest whaling ports in the Pacific, and that history is kept alive at the Whalers Village Museum steps from the property. Long before resorts arrived, this coastline was home to Hawaiian fishing villages and was a royal gathering place. The name “Ka’anapali” means “the divided hill.” Just up the beach is Pu’u Keka’a, or Black Rock, which is sacred in Hawaiian tradition and today one of Maui’s best-loved snorkel spots. Guests have an oceanfront pool, tennis courts and a fitness center, and every evening the Maui sunset sits right outside the lanai.
